Tom Terrific, Straw & Doc : The New York Mets All-Time Team

Greatest Baseball Teams

The Starting Lineup

C     Gary Carter Gary Carter
1B     Keith Hernandez Keith Hernandez
2B     Edgardo Alfonzo Edgardo Alfonzo
SS     Jose Reyes Jose Reyes
3B     David Wright David Wright
LF     Kevin McReynolds Kevin McReynolds
CF     Carlos Beltran Carlos Beltran
RF     Darryl Strawberry Darryl Strawberry
DH     Mike Piazza Mike Piazza
Step right up and greet the Mets!
Bring your kiddies,
bring your wife;
Guaranteed to have the time of your life
because the Mets are really sockin' the ball; knocking those home runs over the wall!

Rusty never played a lot of left field, so against righthanded pitching we'll switch Strawberry to left and put Staub in right. That gets this lineup some more lefthanded bite.
1.   Reyes
2.   Hernandez
3.   Piazza
4.   Strawberry
5.   Beltran
6.   Carter
7.   Wright
8.   Staub/McReynolds
9.   Alfonzo

The Rotation

SP     Tom Seaver Tom Seaver
SP     Jerry Koosman Jerry Koosman
SP     Dwight Gooden Dwight Gooden
SP     David Cone David Cone
SP     Sid Fernandez Sid Fernandez
Basically the best parts of the 1969-1973 rotation and the 1986-1990 rotation, five excellent pitchers, all of them power arms. Three of them (Seaver, Gooden and Cone) won the Cy Young Award, and Koosman finished second once.

The Bullpen

RP     John Franco John Franco
RP     Roger McDowell Roger McDowell
RP     Armando Benitez Armando Benitez
RP     Jesse Orosco Jesse Orosco
RP     Tug McGraw Tug McGraw
The lefthanded arms in the bullpen (Franco, Tug, and Orosco) are probably the best of any team, with the possible exception of the Tigers All-Time Team.

The Bench

C     Todd Hundley Todd Hundley
1B/3B     Dave Magadan Dave Magadan
1B/OF     Dave Kingman Dave Kingman
2B/IF     Hubie Brooks Hubie Brooks
LF     Cleon Jones Cleon Jones
3B/LF     Howard Johnson Howard Johnson
CF     Mookie Wilson Mookie Wilson
CF/1B     Lee Mazzilli Lee Mazzilli
RF/DH     Rusty Staub Rusty Staub
A pretty damn good bench for such a young franchise. We have four switch-hitters (Hundley, Mazzilli, HoJo, and Mookie), and a lot of versatility. King Kong is good for a swing now and then.
