This colorful poster from 1969 features eleven members of the San Francisco Giants. Well, actually ten. Charley Smith, in the top row center, never played a game for the Giants. He was traded to San Francisco in December of 1968, but in the last week of spring training in 1969 the Giants sold him to the Cubs.
Three Hall of Famers are on the poster: Willie Mays, Juan Marichal, and Willie McCovey. The latter won the National League MVP Award in 1969 when he hit 45 home runs and led the league in homers, RBI, slugging, and on-base percentage.
The Giants were a good team in ’69, they stayed in the division race all season. As late as September 22nd they were in first place, but the Braves won ten straight down the stretch and edged the Giants for first place.
