Chase was the best player among this group, but he was a crooked player. In 1920 while playing in the minor leagues, Chase attempted to bribe a player in a gambling scheme and he was banned from organized baseball. It was only the last in a series of incidents in which Chase either succeeded or tried to throw games for money.
