Batted .333 in the 1979 World Series for the champion Pittsburgh Pirates. Foli was a nerdy middle infielder with sure hands and decent range. By the latter stages of his career, Foli was a dinosaur: baseball was no longer content with all-field, no-hit shortstops. Still, he was valuable enough with the leather to log 16 seasons with six teams.
In 1982, Foli walked only 14 times. It was the fewest bases on balls for a player who appeared in at least 150 games in baseball history. The record was later broken by Ozzie Guillén.
