Why are they called the San Francisco Giants?

Like the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Giants are a transplanted team from New York. The Giants name goes back to at least the 1880s, when their manager (Jim Mutrie) liked to call his team “My Giants” because of their stature in the National League (they won titles in 1888 and 1889).
