Gross was a career platoon player hitting from the left side who handled righthanded pitching pretty well. In 1974 with the Astros he finished second in National League Rookie of the Year voting to Bake McBride. Later, he played in an outfield rotation with McBride with the Phillies. He was a corner outfielder who spent the last 13 seasons of his 17-year career as a platoon player and pinch-hitter. Gross had 143 career pinch-hits but never hit a home run in that role. In 1980 he was a member of the World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies. In 1975, Gross reached base in 52 consecutive games, the longest streak of that sort in baseball between 1960 and 1980. During the stretch, Gross hit .345 with 70 hits and 30 walks in the 52 games.
