Don Kessinger

Don KessingerManager Leo Durocher had a significant impact on Don Kessinger when he was a young shortstop for the Cubs. “The Lip” didn’t think Kessinger was aggressive enough and told him so. Durocher wanted a shortstop who would intimidate base runners by throwing the baseball right at them on double play pivots and standing right in the line of fire on hard slides. Kessinger toughened up, and later when he became a player/manager (the last in the American League as of 2016), he credited Durocher with helping him prepare to be a team leader.
