Tippy Martinez

Tippy MartinezConnections

  • Early in the 1979 season, the Baltimore Orioles offered Tippy Martinez to the Detroit Tigers for Milt May. The O’s were looking for a left-handed hitting catcher to team with Rick Dempsey. The Tigers declined to take the Orioles up on the offer, and instead they sold May to the Chicago White Sox in late May. Considering the effectiveness that Tippy showed in the ensuing years as a lefty out of the bullpen for Baltimore, the Tigers made a big mistake.
