The only man to have played in both the National League and the American League, coached in both leagues, managed in both, and umpired in one. Cooney was the son of a big league ballplayer, and two of his brothers played in professional baseball. Johnny was the best of them all, and he had two major league careers. In the first, he was a pitcher with a bending curveball, winning as many as 14 games for the lowly Boston Braves. After a sore arm, he came back to the majors as an outfielder and spent several seasons with Brooklyn and the Braves again, hitting .300 two times. He was a baseball lifer, still scouting when he was in his 80s.
