The Only Video we Have of Ty Cobb’s Baserunning

It seems impossible, but Ty Cobb‘s career .367 batting average is not the most impressive part of his baseball performance. The legend, the first player elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, is best known for his base running.

Yet, because he began his career when Theodore Roosevelt was president, we have very little video footage of Ty Cobb running the bases.

The video below shows Cobb sliding into third base during spring training footage, probably in 1922 or 1923 in Texas. It’s not actual game footage, but it’s the closest we have to Cobb sliding into a bag with competitive intention.
