The Seattle Mariners All-Time Team is Getting Better

Cal raleigh julio rodriguez seattle mariners

When the Seattle Mariners played their first game in 1977 it brought Major League Baseball to the Pacific Northwest. For a few years the Kingdome, which served as home to the Mariners, was the most interesting thing about the franchise. Seattle was the first American League team to play indoors.*

The M’s, as they are known, have never played in a World Series. That makes them one of only two active teams to never win a pennant, along with the Milwaukee Brewers. But they have enjoyed the services of several great players.

The Mariners all-time team features four Hall of Famers: Junior Griffey, Randy Johnson, Edgar Martinez, and Ichiro Suzuki. By contrast, the Blue Jays (who debuted in 1977 too), have three, but not one that played as many as six years with the team.

The Mariners All-Time Team is only getting better. In recent seasons, outfielder Julio Rodriguez has played his way onto the roster. Rodriguez won’t ever supplant Griffey in center, but he makes a great left fielder for our all-time Mariners.

The catcher spot was always a bit weak for the Mariners. Formerly, the all-time team had Dan Wilson and Dave Valle in a platoon role. But given his record-setting slugging, Cal Raleigh has played himself onto the team. He’s clearly the greatest catcher in Mariners’ history: he holds the franchise record for home runs by a catcher, and he’s only 28 years old.

Here’s an updated Seattle all-time team for 2025:

For a team that’s been around for less than 50 years, that’s a very nice lineup. The 1-2 punch in the starting rotation is superb: arguably as good as any expansion team other than the Mets (Tom Seaver and Dwight Gooden).
