Apparently he was a ginger, but who knows? The photos from way back then are all in black and white. Smith was a terrible third baseman, frequently finishing among league leaders in errors, many of them on throws across the infield. But he waved a dangerous bat, hitting 40 doubles one year and batting .278, which wasn’t too shabby in the dead-as-a-doornail era.
