The Detroit Tigers didn’t do much in the 1950s. It was a lost decade for the franchise. But they did have a few good ballplayers come through the clubhouse.
One of those players was Vic Wertz, a hard-hitting outfielder who was a three-time All-Star for the Tigers. In 1949 he drove in 133 runs, and the following season, Wertz plated 123 and finished 10th the American League Most Valuable Player voting. Not bad for a player whose team was buried deep in the second division.
